Why do we ask for this?
Our funder, the National Institutes of Health, requires Montana INBRE to report annually the aggregate number of program participants belonging to certain groups that have been underrepresented in scientific fields, historically. This information is always reported in the aggregate, and Montana INBRE always considers and treats particular person's demographic information as confidential. Montana INBRE does not intentionally report, disclose, or make public any demographic information belonging to any particular individual. Selections provided mirror standard federal government demographic categories for consistency and ease of reporting, whenever possible. Please note that your answers (or preference not to answer) have no bearing on how your application is processed or reviewed.
Do you belong to one or more underrepresented group(s) recognized by NIH?
* must provide value
Yes No Prefer not to answer
NIH defines underrepresented individuals as A) coming from racial and ethnic groups shown to be underrepresented nationally, including Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders and B) individuals with disabilities, defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
American Indian and/or Alaska Native?
* must provide value
Yes No Prefer not to answer
You answered "yes" to the question above about underrepresentation. Do you identify as American Indian and/or Alaska Native?
First Generation College Student?
* must provide value
Yes No Prefer not to answer
Do you consider yourself to be the first person in your immediate family to attend college or university? While the term "first-generation college student" may seem self-explanatory, closer examination leads to questions about the postsecondary experiences of extended family members, older siblings, and even non-family adults who have important roles in the lives of students. There are also related questions for students whose parents attended some college, but did not complete a degree. This has led some institutions to adopt a broader definition that includes "the possibility that a student may lack the critical cultural capital necessary for college success because their parents did not attend or finish college." For these reasons, we simply ask whether you "consider" yourself as the first in your family.
Non-Traditional Student?
* must provide value
Yes No Prefer not to answer
Do you consider yourself to be a "non-traditional" student? "Non-traditional student" is a debated term, but most often age (especially being over the age of 24 as an undergraduate) is used as the defining characteristic. That said, age acts as a blunt stand-in for a variety of other variables that describe adult students who often have family and work responsibilities and/or students with life circumstances that can interfere with successful completion of educational objectives. Other variables that can (but don't necessarily have to) characterize non-traditional students include: residence (i.e., need to commute a long distance to campus), level of employment (especially if working full time), need to care for children or other dependents, and/or being enrolled in non-degree occupational programs.
Rural Background?
* must provide value
Yes No Prefer not to answer
Do you consider yourself as having grown up in a predominantly rural setting? Predominantly rural settings are often characterized by having ranching, farming, agricultural, agrarian, homesteading, hunting/gathering or similar occupations as the main/central economic activities.
Dates, Full-Time Commitment
* must provide value
I understand that the INBRE summer program is a full-time, 10-week (400-hour) commitment and, if selected, I can commit to the entire program on a full time basis I need to explain my situation
Please acknowledge that if you are to receive Montana INBRE funding, you can commit to the entire duration of the program on a full-time basis.
Explain Situation
* must provide value
You selected "I need to explain my situation" in the question above If you are in an unusual situation where you cannot make a full-time commitment to the Montana INBRE Statewide Scholars summer program, please explain.

If I'm selected, I agree create an account with eRA Commons and submit required annual reports to Montana INBRE program staff on time for up to FIVE YEARS after funding / support ends.
Don't worry -- MT INBRE will provide successful applicants with instructions and assistance in completing these tasks. Montana INBRE is funded through the National Institutes of Health, which mandates certain annual reporting requirements from all persons receiving funding for up-to five years after their funding ends. INBRE requires that all interns agree to register with the NIH eRA Commons online portal and complete all required annual reports related to the project.

If I'm selected, I consent to participate in program photos for use in program marketing /reporting / outreach contexts OR inform the photographer during photographed events that I do not want my photo taken.
Montana INBRE occasionally takes photos of our program participants during group events or other scheduled times for limited use in program evaluation and promotion online and in print. Participation in photos is voluntary and NOT a requirement for participation in the program. That said, photographers may not always know your preference (of if it has changed since this application), so participants are expected to remove themselves from any photos they do not want to participate in and inform the photographer of their wishes.
