Series learning objectives:

  • Describe the identification and diagnosis of common mental health and substance use disorders in the perinatal period .
  • Formulate treatment plans for mental health and substance use disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.
  • Compare the risks of untreated disorders with the risks of psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and lactation .
  • Appreciate the role of stigma, racism and social determinants of health in perinatal mental health and substance use treatment engagement .
